We will depart from the port of Piraeus in the morning and an hour we will land at the picturesque port of Aegina. This little harbour is usually filled with local fishing-boats and luxurious yachts. For starters, we will visit the town of Aegina and its traditional food market. Later on, we'll drive to explore the island. It is full of beautiful sandy beaches and interesting archaeological sites. We would like to propose at least four of these places.
Aegina Island Things To Do - Aegina Island Activities...
The beaches of Aegina:
They come at a satisfactory variety. You can find them all around the island. There are sandy beaches with or without beach bars, sunbeds and umbrellas. There are beaches with shallow waters and beach sites where you can jump in deep waters.
The Temple of Aphaea:
It was dedicated to goddess Aphaea who was later associated with Athens. The temple was part of a pagan, equilateral conceivable holy triangle of temples that connected the temple of Aphaea to the Athenian Parthenon and the temple of Poseidon in Sounion. The Temple of Aphaea is undoubtedly considered to be a jewel of Aegina. You can wander around Paleachora (old city) and visit the archaeological site of Kolona.
The monastery of Agios Nektarios:
It is one of the most visited sites on the island. The Byzantine monastery of Agios Nektarios is dedicated to Saint Nectarios of Aegina, who lived in the years 1846-1920. He was officially recognized as Saint by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople in 1961 and is one of the most widely known Greek Orthodox Saints. Thousands of people visit his tomb to pray or ask for his blessings that always seem to be answered. The Church celebrates his memory on his name day annually, on the 9th of November.
Aegina Fistiki Festival:
Aegina a famous island of its production of pistachio nuts that are called «Fistikia» in greek. The locals celebrate their harvest each September, with «The Aegina Fistiki Festival». The Aegina Fistiki Fest lasts 4 days. You can enjoy a big variety of meals, experience the cheerful local music, dance or observe their theatric & artistic events.
We'll have lunch at a local restaurant and later on, you'll have free time for a pleasant walk around the city.
